As a conservative, I believe that there are definite lines between right and wrong. The line may be wavy, the line may be thin, but it's not invisible. I believe that the government should be the servant of the people, not our master. I believe that unborn children have the right to be born. I believe that the bill of rights should not be subverted by any means, covertly or overtly.

It's wrong to kill unborn children because you were irresponsible and caused their conception when you did not want children. There are free and low cost contraceptives available to everyone. At 8 weeks after conception a baby has a heartbeat and brain waves. Abortions are performed at every point from conception until birth. Abortions are only justified when a pregnancy poses an unusual level of risk to the health of the mother. Women who have abortions for any other reason should be prosecuted for first degree murder. Doctors who perform abortions for any other reason should be stripped of their medical licenses and prosecuted as well.

I understand that there is not enough popular support to enact any legislation that outlaws abortion. But in the meantime there should be limitations. There should be NO abortions performed on minors without parental consent. There should be mandatory 24 hour waiting periods. Women who wish to have abortions should have to witness a sonogram of their babies. There should be spousal notification, this includes the father of the baby in unmarried women.

For decades liberals have practiced gradually enacting social changes. When I was a child people could be seen smoking in hospitals. Now the anti smoking people are trying to enact legislation that would make it illegal to smoke in your own home or in your own car. Twenty years ago, such measures would have been laughed at, today they are taken seriously. It's time we learned from their successful example and began pushing for small changes towards our eventual end.

In 1934 a law was passed restricting the ownership of fully automatic firearms and short barreled shotguns. In 1968 gun dealers were made to be registered federally. In 1994 entire classes of firearms were made illegal and a federal waiting period was imposed. Where are they heading with this?

In states where private citizens are permitted to carry concealed firearms the rate of violent crime is consistently lower than the national average. It is especially lower than in states that prohibit or strictly control handgun ownership. Of course it is the job of the police to catch criminals but the police are reactive, they can only do something after a crime has been committed. Furthermore the police don't have an obligation to provide safety for any individual person. The police can't be everywhere at once and no reasonable person expects them to be. The only realistic hope for long term crime prevention is for responsible citizens to have the choice of arming themselves.
